Marine Folding Boom Crane
Model 20TX15M

Marine folding boom cranes combine high functionality with a compact design. Their robust steel structure and versatile hydraulic drive support all primary crane operations: hoisting, outreach adjustment, and slewing.

Compared to stiff boom models, these cranes require less space in the stowed position and provide a wider range of working areas during operation.

The 20TX15M model provides a lifting capacity of up to 20 t at a 15 m outreach. The stowed boom has an overall length of only 11.5 m, ensuring efficient use of space during transportation and storage. An ergonomic cabin provides comfortable working conditions for the crane operator.

Barbette

(highlighted in blue)

The barbette assembly serves as a robust structural support for installation of the slewing system. The structure is securely mounted to the vessel foundation, while the internal platform provides safe and convenient access for slip ring maintenance.

Structure housing

(highlighted in blue)

The crane housing serves as the primary structure for mounting the boom, hydraulic cylinders, and the operator’s cabin. It houses the key systems, including the hydraulic oil tank, pump units, and slewing drives. The design ensures safe access for maintenance: a vessel access door and service hatch lead to the barbette platform and the slip ring assembly.

Marine Folding Boom Crane: Flexibility and Reliability in Arctic Seas

The Vessel’s Arm in Harsh Environments

Modern vessels have long evolved beyond simple means of transport. Today, they are complex floating systems performing a wide range of tasks — from cargo transportation to scientific research. However, no matter how powerful the propulsion plant or how robust the hull, a vessel remains vulnerable without specialized equipment. A marine folding boom crane is one of the key elements of onboard equipment.

Often referred to as the vessel’s “arm,” it enables container handling, heavy-load operations, equipment deployment overboard and, in critical situations, emergency rescue operations. This role is especially vital in the Arctic, where severe ice conditions and unpredictable weather demand reliable, well-engineered solutions.

Advantages of a Folding Boom

A key feature of the crane is its folding boom. In the stowed position, the crane occupies minimal space, does not interfere with mooring or maneuvering, and remains safe in ice conditions. Unlike stiff boom cranes, the folding boom design allows effective operation in confined spaces while retaining versatility — from container handling to subsea operations.

Electro-Hydraulic Drive

The drive system is equally important. The electro-hydraulic system combines the precision of electric control with the power of hydraulics. This ensures that the crane operates smoothly and reliably under high winds and vessel motion, withstands extreme temperatures, and is suitable for both port and open-sea operations.

Arctic Operational Importance

As the Northern Sea Route becomes an increasingly important corridor for shipping and expeditions, such cranes enable vessels to perform tasks in conditions where all equipment is subjected to extreme operational stress. For researchers, it enables seabed instrument deployment and sample retrieval; for rescue services, it ensures that evacuation or equipment delivery can be carried out without delay.

Operator Comfort

Human factors are also considered in the design. Operators may work full shifts in cold conditions and under continuous vibration. Therefore, the cabin is designed as a modern workstation: an ergonomic seat, climate control, panoramic glazing, and video monitoring systems help maintain focus, visibility, and comfort throughout operation.

Looking Ahead

Ongoing technological development is steadily transforming marine cranes into integral components of intelligent systems. They are integrated into automated control systems and equipped with remote control and advanced safety systems. In the future, such cranes will move closer to autonomous operation, with the operator acting primarily as a supervisor.

Izhora Hydrosystems LLC develops folding boom cranes adapted for harsh operating environments. The company’s experience and modern engineering solutions make this equipment a reliable partner for fleets operating in the world’s most demanding regions.
